Aging in Place and Home Modifications are a Priority Amongst Maryland Seniors
The Maryland AARP newsletter reported that over 80 percent of Maryland seniors would like to remain in their own homes as they age, rather than having to move in with family or into a nursing home. According to AARP Maryland State Director, Joseph DeMattos, “Our members not only ranked health care services important, they highly rated other aspects of being able to age in place in their community…They want safe environments…”

Living Solutions has been approved as an Environmental Assessibility Adaptations provider under the Maryland Autism Waiver program. Families eligible for the Autism Waiver can use up to $1500 toward Home Modifications during any 3 year cycle. Consumer Reports releases report criticizing regulation of nursing homes
Consumer Reports has just released its annual report of the quality of nursing home care. The report found that twenty years after Congress passed a law to better regulate nursing homes and increase their quality of care, significant problems still persist and that state agencies responsible for overseeing nursing home care have often failed to correct problems. Dr. Tulenko presents Assistive Device update at Sunrise Brighton Gardens
Dr. Tulenko gave an Assistive Device update to the staff of the Sunrise Senior Living Brighton Gardens. She reviewed low cost methods to improve the quality of life of seniors, and improve the safety of caregivers. Dr. Tulenko demonstrated the proper use of Transfer Belts, Bathing and Dressing Aids, and Easy Grip utensils.

Living Solutions and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services
Living Solutions hosted a training on Home Assessments for the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (MC HHS). MC HHS serves several hundred clients with severe handicaps and works to make them more independent. The training helped MC HHS case managers determine how Home Assessments and Home Modifications could increase their clients’ dignity and independence.

Living Solutions Attends Aging-in-Place Training
As part of our commitment to maintaining the highest technical quality of our services, Living Solutions staff participated in Rebuilding Together’s regional “Safety First” workshop. The workshop was cosponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services, the Administration on Aging, and the National Association of Home Builders Research Center and was attended by participants as far away as Illinois, Georgia, and Connecticut. Topics covered included recent technical improvements in common home modifications such as grab bars and doorway widening.

Living Solutions trains OTs on the importance of Home Assessments and Home Mods
Dr. Kate Tulenko conducted an in-service training for occupational therapists (OTs) and physical therapists (PTs) at Suburban Hospital. The training helped the OTs and PTs to determine which of their patients could best benefit from Home Assessments and Home Modifications. The training included a review of medical journal articles documenting the functional and financial benefits of Home Assessments and Home Mods as well as their underutilization due to lack of awareness.

Washington, DC – Living Solutions president Dr. Kate Tulenko was interviewed for Real Estate Weekly’s feature article “Keep Pace with Aging-in-Place” by Paul Rogers. She was quoted on seniors’ desire to remain in their own homes rather than having to move and on the challenges of making bathrooms accessible. The article described Aging-in-Place as the latest trend in real estate with home buyers increasingly demanding Universally Designed homes that meet their changing needs. The article appeared in several regional issues of Real Estate Weekly and was picked up by several newspapers.
